Circular table top with an exceptionally finely executed micromosaic composition, set on Belgian black marble. The central field depicts a rich bouquet of flowers and fruits – including roses, grapes, citrus fruits and peaches – rendered with remarkable detail and subtle colour gradation. The border consists of geometric ornaments in green, blue, red and gold.
The quality and refinement of the mosaic, together with the vividness and harmony of the composition, are characteristic of the workshop of Michelangelo Barberi (1787–1867), one of the most renowned masters of Roman micromosaic art in the 19th century. Works of this type were frequently produced for Grand Tour travellers as prestigious souvenirs of Italy.
