Tibetan Gilt-Bronze Buddha, 17th–18th Century

Tibetan Gilt-Bronze Buddha, 17th–18th Century

“A Tibetan gilt-bronze figure of Bhaisajyaguru (Medicine Buddha), 17th–18th century.
Cast in bronze and richly gilded, the Buddha is shown seated in dhyanasana on a double-lotus base with beaded rims. His right hand reaches downward in the bhumisparsha mudra, calling the earth to witness his enlightenment, while his left hand rests in his lap holding a medicine bowl symbolizing healing nectar. The serene facial expression, elongated earlobes, and prominent ushnisha exemplify Tibetan Buddhist iconography of the period. The gilt surface, combined with the softly modeled features and robust lotus base, reflect the craftsmanship of Tibetan or Sino-Tibetan ateliers active during the 17th–18th centuries.”
