Triboulet, The Kingâs Fool
Model created in 1882
Lost-wax cast bronze, Compagnie des Bronzes, Brussels
H. 54 cm
Signed J. Willems and bearing the foundry stamp
In Triboulet, The Kingâs Fool, Joseph Willems portrays the celebrated court fool associated with Louis XII and subsequently Francis I of France. Rather than reducing his subject to picturesque attributes, the sculptor transforms him into a compelling character study, dominated by the intensity of his expression.
Wearing the traditional foolâs cap and an imposing ruff, Triboulet is portrayed with deliberately exaggerated features: a prominent nose and cheekbones, narrowed eyes and a broad smile revealing his teeth. The precision of the modelling, subtle asymmetry of the expression and deeply worked folds of the costume lend the figure a remarkably vivid presence.
The socle bears the title Le Fol du Roy together with an old inscription relating to Triboulet, explicitly establishing the identity of the sitter. The work was cast using the lost-wax process by the Compagnie des Bronzes, Brussels, whose foundry stamp it bears.
The model belongs to a series of character busts developed by Willems with the foundry in the early 1880s. The Compagnie des Bronzes archives record several models from 1882, including Triboulet, Bouffon, Pedrolino and LâOiseleur. Listed under number 1362, Triboulet was produced in three sizes. At 54 cm high, the present example corresponds to the large version.
The archives further reveal that in 1898, Triboulet and Pedrolino were sent together to St Petersburg for the First Belgian Exhibition of Fine Arts, St PetersburgâMoscow (1898â1899). Their historical association confirms their place within the same sculptural programme devoted to expression, costume and the study of character.
