Niemeyer, São Paulo _ Mireille Roobaert
Architecture, light and modernist lines: Niemeyer's Brazil as seen by Mireille Roobaert.
This photograph by Mireille Roobaert reveals the interior of the Pavilhão Ciccillo Matarazzo, home of the São Paulo Biennial and an iconic work by Oscar Niemeyer in the heart of Ibirapuera Park. The photographer's gaze focuses on the very essence of Niemeyer's architecture: curves, movement, and lightness. Ramps and walkways intersect around a sculptural pillar, transforming the space into an almost abstract composition. The tight framing blurs any sense of scale and creates a dialogue between lines, volumes, shadows, and light. Through her black-and-white treatment, Roobaert further accentuates the graphic dimension of the architecture. The concrete seems to lose its weight, and the different levels overlap like elements of a drawing. Beyond its architectural documentation, the image offers a personal interpretation of Niemeyer's world, where modernist rigor gives way to the fluidity and sensuality of forms. The building itself is part of the original ensemble designed by Niemeyer for Ibirapuera Park, and its curved ramps and mezzanines are among its most remarkable features.
