the gentlemen power of silence
Slender, silent silhouettes, poised between fragility, inner strength, and the poetry of matter. Description
Jenny Verplanke's sculptures give rise to slender human figures, stripped of all superfluous detail. Their elongated bodies, restrained poses, and barely sketched faces exude a presence that is both fragile and deeply grounded. Material plays an essential role in her work. Created from a paper-based mixture, the sculptures retain an irregular, organic, and vibrant surface. The roughness, marks, and imperfections contribute fully to their identity and contrast with the elegance of the silhouettes. Without striving for realism, Jenny Verplanke focuses more on expressing an attitude, an emotion, an inner state. Her figures seem absorbed in their thoughts, alone or in silent dialogue with one another. Their apparent stillness, however, hints at a tension, a story, a relationship. The sculptures can also be cast in bronze, allowing these figures to be placed outdoors, in a garden or an architectural setting, while preserving the sensitivity of the original model. Between strength and vulnerability, presence and silence, Jenny Verplanke's figures speak of humanity with a great economy of gestures.
